A Bíblia como um todo, não apresentou sempre a forma como hoje é conhecida. Vários textos, chamados hoje de "apócrifos", figuravam anteriormente na Bíblia, mas ao longo dos sucessivos concílios acabaram sendo eliminados. Houve os que depois viriam a ser beneficiados por uma reconsideração e tornariam a partilhar a Bíblia. No inicio do cristianismo os evangelhos eram em número de 315, sendo posteriormente reduzidos para 4, no Concílio de Nicéia.
Em 1947, nas cavernas de Qumran próximo ao Mar morto, vários desses livros religiosos que eram usados no tempo dos primeiros Cristãos foram encontrados. Tornaram-se apócrifos a partir do concílio de Nicéia e foram caindo no esquecimento

Em 325 dc é realizado o Concílio de Nicéia, (província de Anatólia, Turquia). Primeiro Concílio Ecumênico da Igreja. Trezentos Bispos se reúnem, convocados pelo Imperador Romano Constantino. Esse concílio estabeleceu o Novo Testamento, com exeção do apocalipse que foi declarado apócrifo, sendo incorporado ao cânon no concílio de Cartago (África), no ano 397 D.C. |
O cânon do Velho Testamento só foi definitivamente estabelecido após a reforma protestante de 1517 d.c. (versão protestante), e pela contra reforma, no concílio de Trento de 1545 d.c. (versão católica)
